Knitter writes in an essay style while Alvarez writes in poetic style.  Alvarez also uses a more succinct format.  Knitter’s essay is like 4 or 5 movie scenes strung together in a vivid way and really emphasizes the setting of where each event takes place.  Alvarez seemed to focus on one theme–the struggle of bilingualism between cultures.  Alvarez also uses vivid setting descriptions while talking about being bilingual.  I’m not sure if there is really one theme running through Knitter’s essay but aspects of it (descriptions) remind me of the Burning Love essay our class read earlier.
